Sept 22

SS Middle School, Room 168

Simply Sublime: Have you ever seen dry ice sublimate? It is simply spectacular. In this activity we explore phases of matter of both water and dry ice. Is a lemon an acid or a base? What about other household items such as milk, bleach and toothpaste? Test your household items out during acid-base chemistry.

Art: Leaf Paintings

Build: Ferris Wheels, mini skateboards

Science Skills & Content

Simply Sublime…A Dry Ice Lesson: Qualitative Observations

Learn how to use your senses to make observations. Compare samples of regular ice with dry ice to learn the phases of matter. Sublimate dry ice in air and water, and make dry ice bubbles.

Content: States of Matter

Oh So Oobleck: Qualitative vs Quantitative Observations

Make Oobleck and use to list qualitative observations. Discuss possible ways to measure oobleck. Record quantitative observations with your group.

Content: Is Oobleck a Solid or Liquid?

The Toughest Paper Towel Experiment: Experimental Setup

Work with a team of scientists to decide how to test the toughest paper towel. Set up your own controls and variables. Collect data.

Content: The Scientific Method

Acid Base Chemistry

What is PH and how do we test for it? Use cabbage juice as an acid base indicator. Observe beautiful color changes. Set up an experiment to test if a lemon is an acid or base. Use PH meters to test the PH of household substances.
